The first experimental AR project for designing spaces and furniture comfortably from home before making a purchase is brought to you by IKEA’s signature.
With the IKEA STUDIO app, it’s possible to change the color of the walls, furniture elements, and accessories, and then export the created project in both 2D and 3D formats.
Currently, you can try out the IKEA Studio app in its beta version, which is open for access after an initial login on the dedicated website. A clarification: the app operates by capturing 3D environments and their measurements, which is possible using the LiDAR sensors of iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
So, no, without these devices, you won’t be able to try it out.
However, if you do have these latest iPhone versions, you have at your disposal a technology capable of generating the basic project of the rooms to scale, and identifying surfaces, objects, and the entire geometry of the room to renovate and furnish.
At this point, you can have fun customizing your space in endless ways.
The entire project, developed by STUDIO 10 (of which Ikea is the owner) in Copenhagen, was indeed born as a mobile app, while also keeping an eye on the future and what can be considered the “past,” referring to the web.
“While developing what is now the mobile app, we also explored how the service could be experienced with devices such as glasses and headsets,” stated Tommy Campbell, Digital Design Lead at SPACE10. “Therefore, we deliberately chose to design the Studio’s vision to be compatible with both smartphones and these devices.”
Simultaneously, SPACE10 is also developing WebAR solutions that will allow users to access the capabilities of AR Design directly from IKEA’s website.
